Bringing Prefab Home

While at the Whole Foods Market the other day — buying gallons of water by the case — I came across a “special issue” of DWELL magazine.

The Prefab Sourcebook.

I’ve tried to follow prefab — of all kinds — for years now. It made sense to me because TIME and PRODUCTIVITY are the two enemies of construction contractors. Including some prefab (as much as one can) in a project just makes sense for any electrical contractor . . . and, of course, for all types of other contractors as well.

But this “newsstand” magazine is aimed at homeowners. Button on the cover; “For the first time ever, Dwell’s definitive collection of prefab houses.”

Obviously, the trend is a lot bigger than I had considered. It’s one thing for a magazine to put out a special issue on this. It’s quite another for the publisher to slap it at cash registers where average folks (i.e., people who have careers doing something else, and are involved in construction only by virtue of wanting to buy a home) could buy the thing and become deeply immersed in Prefab.

Oh, yeah — one other thing: It’s 168 pages.
