Lighting 101: Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs)

When looking into lowering your electricity costs, a popular option is to switch all of the light bulbs in your home or office to compact fluorescent light (CFL) bulbs. Switching to CFLs couldn’t be easier, but it’s not uncommon to wonder: are these bulbs really more efficient than regular incandescent bulbs?

The answer is simple: yes!

Here are some facts about CFLs, according to ENERGY STAR:

  • They use 75% less energy than standard bulbs.
  • They can last for more than 3,000! Compare that to the average 1,000 hours for a standard light bulb.
  • They can create less than 75% less heat than regular bulbs. This means, when you keep your lights on for a long period of time, your house won’t heat up!
  • They can help lower your overall electricity usage and utilities.

The Science Behind CFLs

Creating light by running electricity through a resistive filament, incandescent light bulbs heat the filament to a very high temperature. This causes the bulb to glow and produce an extremely visible light, however more than 98 percent of the energy used is emitted as heat.

On the other hand, CFL bulbs produce ultraviolet light, working by passing electricity through a mercury vapor, exciting the gas. As the UV light hits the white coating inside of the CFL bulb, the coating changes into a light that you can see. CFL bulbs don’t use heat to create light.

Lumens Per Watt

A regular incandescent bulb can produce about 15 lumens per watt while CFL bulbs typically produce 50 to 70 lumens per watt. In other words, you can buy a 15-watt CFL bulb that produces the same about of light as a regular 60-watt regular incandescent bulb.

General Cost and Lifespan

A 6-pack of GE 60-watt incandescent light bulbs costs approximately $4 while a 2-pack of GE 15-watt CFL bulbs (equivalent to a 60-watt regular incandescent bulb) costs approximately $13. While it’s clearly obvious that regular incandescent bulbs are inexpensive, the typical lifespan is around 1,000 hours versus an average lifespan ranging between 1,200 to 20,000 hours for CFL bulbs.

Savings

Using 2/3 less energy than a regular incandescent light bulb and lasting up to 10 times as longer, replacing your average 60-watt regular incandescent bulb with a 15-watt CFL can save you at least $30 in energy costs over the lifespan of the bulb. On average, you’ll save approximately $6 per year per bulb.

Generator Guidelines ...So You Are Ready For a Power Outage

Power outages come at the most inconvenient times. It seems there is never a flashlight in the house when it happens and if you find one, the batteries are surely dead! To make sure that this madness doesn't effect you this year, why not add a backup generator to your Christmas list? There are many types of poratble generators that allow you to string an extension cord for lighting and small appliances in your home. However, you should be thinking much bigger and add a whole-house generator to run your whole home when the power goes off. With the addition of an automatic transfer switch, the generator will start itself up and switch the power from the utility company connection to the whole-house generator in about a minute. This all happens without you ever getting out of your easy chair!

‘The Limits of Energy Innovation’: Timeless Insight from Vaclav Smil

[Editor note: One of the great energy scholars of our time is Vaclav Smil, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Environment and Geography at the University of Manitoba. This (modified) article remains as fresh today as it was when originally published in 2009.]

President Barack Obama has promised an energy revolution in the world’s largest economy, with renewable sources of power and “green” technologies breaking America’s – and ultimately the world’s – dependence on conventional fuels…. But how realistic is this vision?

Primary Energies: Unchanged

There is only one kind of primary energy (energy embodied in natural resources) that was not known to the first high civilizations of the Middle East and East Asia and by all of their pre-industrial successors: isotopes of the heavy elements whose nuclear fission has been used since the late 1950’s to generate heat that, in turn, produces steam for modern electricity turbo-generators. Every other energy resource has been known for millennia, and most of them were harnessed by pre-modern societies.

The fundamental difference between traditional and modern uses of energy consists not in access to new or better energy resources, but in the invention and mass deployment of efficient, affordable, reliable, and convenient “prime movers,” devices that convert primary energies into mechanical power, electricity, or heat. History could be profitably subdivided into eras defined by the prevailing prime movers.

The longest span (from the first hominids to the domestication of draft animals) is made up of the age when human muscles were the only prime mover. Then came the addition of draft animals and gradual supplementation of animal prime movers by mechanical prime movers, such as sails and wheels, that capture natural energy flows.

A fundamental break with this millennia-long pattern came only with widespread adoption of the first practical mechanical prime mover able to convert the heat of fuel combustion – James Watt’s improved steam engine, designed in the 1780’s. More efficient versions of this prime mover dominated the modernization of the Western world until the first decade of the twentieth century.

During the 1830’s, the first water turbines marked the beginning of the end of the waterwheel era. The next two key milestones came during the 1880’s, with the invention by Benz, Daimler, and Maybach of the gasoline-fuelled Otto-cycle internal combustion engine and the patenting of Charles Parsons’ steam turbine. The 1890’s witnessed the arrival of Rudolf Diesel’s inherently more efficient version of the liquid-fueled internal combustion engine.

There is only one more prime mover to add to this sequence. The gas turbine was conceived at the beginning of the twentieth century, but its first working prototypes (both stationary and for flight) came only during the 1930’s, and began to be rapidly diffused in the 1950’s.

Internal Combustion Engine

Today’s most ubiquitous mechanical prime mover – installed in nearly a billion road and off-road vehicles, water vessels, airplanes, and countless machines and tools – is the gasoline-fueled internal combustion engine, fundamentally unchanged since the 1880’s.

Economic globalization would have been impossible without the diesel engines that power enormous crude and liquefied natural gas tankers, bulk cargo vessels transporting iron ore and grain, and massive container ships: some of them now have unit capacities close to 100 MW, but their basic design was mastered within two decades of Diesel’s test of his final engine prototype in 1897.

Most of the world’s electricity is generated by steam turbines in fossil-fuel-burning and nuclear power plants, and, except for much larger capacities and higher efficiencies, Parsons would recognize in them every key feature of his invention, now more than 120 years old.

And intercontinental flights would be an even greater trial without the gas turbines invented in the 1930’s by Frank Whittle (who thought about turbofans, now the dominant commercial design, even before he built the first turbojet) and Joachim Pabst von Ohain.

Mechanical Prime Movers

These realities offer three obvious but under-appreciated conclusions about the mechanical prime movers that are the foundations of our economic progress.

First, because of their large numbers and their associated (and often expensive and extensive) infrastructures, prime movers are remarkably inert. There has been little real innovation ever since these prime movers were first commercialized more than a century ago (water turbines, steam turbines, internal combustion engines) or more than 50 years ago (gas turbines).

Second, any transition to new prime movers is an inherently prolonged affair, taking decades to accomplish. Even today, for example, there are few indications that steam turbines will not continue to generate the bulk of our electricity in the decades ahead, or that gas turbines will be replaced anytime soon. Recent developments show that even automotive internal combustion engines will not yield to electric motors or fuel cells as rapidly as many enthusiasts have hoped.

Third, the wider the scale on which an energy prime mover is deployed, the longer it will take for substitutions to appear. A century ago, the world used coal and a relatively small volume of oil at the rate of 0.7 TW, but in 2008 established commercial energies – fossil fuels and primary (water and nuclear) electricity – flow at the rate of nearly 15 TW. Obviously, this scale limits the speed with which new prime movers can be introduced to replace any significant share of the old devices.

For example, if 20% of the world’s electricity were to be generated by wind turbines, then, considering their inherently low load factor of about 25% (compared to 75% for thermal stations using steam turbines), we would need to install new capacity of some 1.25 TW in these machines. Even with large 3-MW turbines, this would require more than 400,000 new tall towers and giant triple blades. That is a task for many decades.

Electrical Components Compromised By Flood Waters

Seaside Heights, N.J. - Officials determined that the electrical fire which claimed 50 businesses in the Jersey Shore communities, was caused by electrical components. Investigators said the fire began under a building due to failed electrical equipment. "During the storm, this wiring and these connection became fully submerged in water," Ocean Country Prosecutor Joseph Coronato said in a news conference. "Over time, degradation of this wiring and these connections occurred." They urged that homeowners and other businesses affected by water to have their wiring inspected for similar issues.

Electrical Components Compromised By Flood Waters

Here in Cincinnati, similar instances can happen with flooded basesments, or homes that have water leaks in upper floors that trickle down to lower levels, causing damage to wiring inside the walls. After a flood in the home or a business, even minor leaks or toilet over flows, a CurrentSAFE test of your electrical system can prevent electrical failures caused by components that are compromised during a flood. Degradation of electrical materials that are negatively effected by exposure to water are hazards. These types of things can be found and eliminated with the CurrentSAFE process.

Disaster Recovery is key, and our CurrentSAFE professionals understand the importance of returning the home and electrical system to the specific state your house was in before disaster occurred. We are knowledgeable in helping consult you on the processes that follow these types of unfortunate events.

What YOU Can Do to Reduce Pollution?

What YOU Can Do to Reduce Pollution?

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has prepared this fact sheet to answer some of the most common questions about reducing emissions from private vehicles.

This is an important concern, as cars are a major source of air pollution in the United States. Vehicle emissions contribute to health and environmental problems such as urban smog, air toxics, and global warming. Yet individual driving habits make a big difference in the amount of pollution a car produces.

Three easy things you can do to help keep emissions as low as possible are:

• Avoid unnecessary driving

• Maintain your car properly

• Drive your car wisely

By combining these strategies, you can very effectively reduce the amount your car pollutes. And there are additional benefits — your car will last longer and you will save money.

Avoid Unnecessary Driving

The most effective way to reduce emissions from your vehicle is to use it less.

Vehicle travel in this country is doubling every 20 years. Traffic trends that see

more and more cars driving more and more miles will soon begin to outpace

technological progress in vehicle emission control.

Several options are available to help you reduce the amount you drive. These

include consolidating trips, telecommuting, carpooling, using public transit, and choosing clean transportation alternatives such as biking or walking.

By planning errands, you will get the most out of time you do spend behind the wheel. For example, call ahead to confirm that the product you need is in stock before you drive to the store. Plan to do several tasks when you go somewhere.

Drive to a central location and park. Then walk between nearby destinations.

Ridesharing can be an ideal way to reduce your personal contribution to pollution.

Every time you share a ride and eliminate a trip, you help the environment. Try pairing up for trips to work or to social events — even an occasional carpool or ride on public transportation will make a difference.

Biking or walking to your destination creates no pollution at all. And you’ll

increase your fitness level at the same time.

And depending on how well you take each aspect in consideration, it will pretty much determine how long to grow tomatoes. You can always ask your neighbors if you seem to lack such information or you can find yourself a guide that you can now find online these days.

One of the things you might want to have in order to produce the best tomatoes is the proper lighting. As a matter of fact, the more you expose your crops to sunlight, the better they are going to get. However, make sure not to place them in a place where wind is abundant.

Another thing to consider is the soil you are planning to plant your tomatoes in. The best thing to do is to sterilize your soil from time to time. It is recommended to do so twice every season. What is important is that your soil is free from various infections or diseases that could affect your plants.

It is also important to keep your soil moist at most times. These are just some of the things to consider. Why learn how long to grow tomatoes if you could only learn the best ways to care for them instead. Doing so will surely get you there – an unlimited supply of fresh tomatoes.

Wind Generation is the Future Renewable Type of Energy

The future of power generation is going to be greatly influenced by the Wind.Wind is the Types of Renewable Energy that uses a wind turbine to generate the electricity. By the end of 2009 wind generation accounted for the generation of 159.2 gigawatts, which is about 2% of the worlds electricity required. Going forward wind generation has the technical potential to produce 40 times it current electricity generation.

There is a wide range of wind turbines available for many suppliers and they fall into two categories just like most other things around the world.  There is a range of domestic wind generators ranging from 100 watts up to 1 Kilowatt and a much wider range of commercial units that range from 600 Kilowatts to 5 Megawatts however wind turbines with the rated output of 1.5 to 3 Megawatts are most commonly used in the commercial wind farms around the world.

Regardless of the rated output wind turbines use exactly the same method to generate an electricity supply. Basically they use they do exactly opposite to an electric motor. An electric motor uses a supply of electricity to energize a coil of wire (the armature) that is contained in a magnetic field this causes the armature to turn therefore supplies a source of mechanical energy. Now a wind turbine on the other hand takes it energy source from the wind and using the blades to mechanically turn the armature within the magnetic field. This movement within the magnetic field induces an electrical current in the windings, which can be used to feed into the main power grid or into a battery bank in the case of a stand-alone system.

The rate of electricity generated is proportional to the speed at which the turbine turns. Before installing a wind generator you need to do some research into whether or not the location that you live in is suitable. You need to have what as known as clean wind meaning that there is no interference to the flow of wind into the generator like trees mountains builds etc. It is also a good idea to install some wind monitoring equipment and study the amount of wind you can actually take advantage of. You may find that your location is not suitable for a wind generator and you may need to look at other types of renewable energy like Solar Panels.

The use of wind generators for the creation of electricity is growing across the globe by a staggering rate of 30% per year. The fact that people are using the power of the wind it is making Wind Turbines one of the forefront in the Types of Renewable Energy and as the need for more electricity and the need to reduce greenhouse gases there will be more research and development conducted to better the technology that we are already using to make wind turbines more efficient and cheaper to construct.  As they find was to make them cheaper the more people will choose to use them making it a win win situation for use and the environment.

The Regulatory Personality in Energy Markets

[Editor note: Six regulatory personalities related to government intervention in the U.S. oil and gas market (through the mid-1980s) are identified by the author. The reader is invited to add categories or examples of regulators to this list.]

The classical tyrant that has frequented other countries has not been a factor in the U.S. oil and gas experience (or the U.S. economy). [1] The existence of private property and democratic institutions is the major reason; the moderating influence of the industry over intervention is another reason. Huey Long of Louisiana, who as governor and U.S. Senator, left a controversial mark on oil and gas politics, probably is the closest to being an exception.

Instead of tyrants, hundreds of legislators and regulators have shaped oil and gas intervention at all levels of government. Shades of difference have marked major figures, but one premise has been shared by all — the efficacy of government intervention to achieve economic and social objectives. This can be called the constructivist mentality: government planners substituting their knowledge for that of the decentralized market.

Six Categories

Six categories of the constructivist mentality can be delineated. There is the professional regulator who sees intervention as a way of life and a public duty. Financial well being is secondary to the call of state, and when regulation beckons he is ready. The outstanding example in the petroleum field is Harold Ickes who presided over the industry during the New Deal and in World War II. Mark Requa was in a class with Ickes but got his chance only in World War I.

Next there is the naive idealist who brings a well-meaning attitude to his regulatory tasks but becomes disillusioned with the results and either continues for want of an alternative or retires from the scene for another government position or the private sector. No doubt all major regulatory episodes have examples, but 1970s oil price and allocation controls would have the most.

Third is the opportunist, who sees intervention not only as appropriate in itself but as a means to the greater ends of power, income, and prestige. One example is Charles Owens of the Federal Energy Office, a young turk who played a major role with oil regulation in the formative 1972–74 period. Another example is President Eisenhower by virtue of his consequential, and to many, infamous gas-bill veto.

There is the anti-industry regulator, who combines a preference for intervention with a fundamental dislike or at least a deep-seated suspicion of the industry. To him the price of intervention is seldom too high despite the resulting distortions. Price controllers Leon Henderson, John Kenneth Galbraith, and Chester Bowles in World War II, and Michael DiSalle and Tighe Woods during Korean planning, were examples. Add an element of demagoguery and President Carter and his energy-czar James Schlesinger would be other major examples.

There is also the pro-industry regulator, who combines a propensity to intervene with a strong preference in favor of industry positions. Longtime Chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission E. O. Thompson is an outstanding example. Other examples would also center around oil-state conservation agency leaders.

A final category of constructivist architects is the pragmatic regulator, who differs from the opportunist by beginning with a fundamental dislike of intervention but warms up to the powers at hand. He may begin by championing intervention designed to make regulation more efficient and “market conforming,” but soon his actions are scarcely differentiable from an idealist of the opposite persuasion.

The most prominent example is William Simon, who jawboned, chastised, and regulated in his tenure as head of the Federal Energy Office in 1973 and 1974. As Treasury Secretary Simon continued to take interventionist positions, as demonstrated by his national-security finding in favor of oil tariffs in early 1975.

Another example of pragmatism in office was President Reagan’s appointment as Secretary of the Department of Energy, James Edwards. Edwards began with a vow to work himself out of a job by abolishing the agency but left several years later fully converted to the agency’s mission.

Behind the major regulators are an army of lower-level bureaucrats. They generally run the gamut from idealists to professionalists. But there is another characteristic, applicable to some and maybe more thann some, that critics have emphasized — relative incompetency. In a 1934 editorial inspired by a visit to Washington, D.C., veteran National Petroleum News editor Warren Platt concluded:

Washington is full of failures, full of people who could not earn what they are now getting anywhere else. . . . There are a few bright men down there who are using their jobs as a stepping stone but the rest are simply working in a treadmill. They shirk every step they can and salve their conscience with the thoughts that anyway the government “owes” them a better living than they are getting. [2]

Shielded from profit/loss and cushioned by civil service rules and political connections, untalented bureaucrats aggravate inefficiency already inherent in government operation.

Postscript

The above classifications must have the flexibility to describe an individual who changes his primary motivation, or has elements of more than one trait. It is a historical tool and must be used appropriately with is (was), not ought or could.

A question for the reader. Are there other categories in addition to the above six? And what examples from recent decades can be added to the names above?

Modernize from clunky mechanical timer to auto adjusting digital multi-day lighting timer

Did your lighting timer go out of whack with daylight savings time? Tired of fussing with resetting awkward, over-sized mechanical timers that keep time about as well as granddads wind-up watch from Kmart? New digital timers operate reliably for two years or more on battery, keeping time according to astronomically calibrated daylight tables, and removing the need for twice-per-year timer adjustment, and increasing your options for lighting and other timed-load programs.

Contact Robert Monk Electric to arrange installation of a replacement or new timer switch for flood lights around your home or business, or common area lighting in multi-unit rental properties. Installed cost may range from $200 to $500, depending on the type and layout of existing wiring.

A digital timer with GFCI receptacle takes up less room and offers many more features than the bulky, clumsy mechanical timer it replaced.

Mechanical timers can open and close loads in excess of 2000W -- possibly their only advantage.

Infrared Thermo - The Language of Heat

Infrared Thermal imaging tells an electrical story

Picture 6 Infrared Thermo The Language of Heat In EC&M Magazine October 2013 issue they discuss utilizing infrared thermography for your predictive and preventive maintenance program. Some points to take away:
•Used competently and intelligently, infrared imaging  used to pinpoint abnormally high or rising heat from resistance in electrical circuitry… can save money.
•Like Any Tool, Infrared Thermography is only as good as the Operator.
•The Technology Requires Both Operator Expertise and a Game Plan for Using It.
•In trained hands – and when integrated into a broader predictive and preventive electrical maintenance program – it can be used to get out in front of costly electrical breakdowns.
•Elements of a strong IR Thermography report generally include a detailed description of equipment, good images, description of the problems, testing conditions, a severity ranking, and recommended actions.
•Common mistakes inadequately trained imagers make, may include taking readings through cabinet doors and covers, not controlling for target emissivity and reflectivity that can produce false readings; and failing to understand how target distance and angle impact readings.
•You need equipment to run under normal operating conditions for thermal imaging to be meaningful.
•A long term imaging plan can be based on factors including reliability demands, component-specific findings, budget considerations, manufacturer recommendations, and even insurer thermography requirements.

‘Attacks on Doctors Have Become Increasingly Common’

That’s what it says in Caixin Online, a Chinese publication (English version). The piece asked the WHY question, and offers this answer:

Amid economic growth and technological advances made in recent years, some in society have high expectations for the medical services they deserve. In their view, a doctor should be able to cure a disease after a trip to the hospital.

What they do not understand is that medicine is still an extremely complex field. Many treatments involve risks, and failures are not necessarily the doctor’s fault. As one veteran doctor said: “Too many promises have been made regarding modern medical treatment of diseases.”

Sometimes doctors cannot live up to those expectations. To go one step further, the public’s lack of understanding regarding how the medical field operates has created a mistrust of medical professionals.

With all due respect, THIS SOUND LIKE TOTAL B.S. Diappointed people do not attack doctors with knives.

Angry people do. The question (albeit something Caixin might not want to answer) is — what ELSE are the Chinese doctor-attackers so freaking angry about?

House Fire Investigation - Cause Electrical

NEWPORT, Ky. — July 28, 2013 - A house fire caused 100,000 dollars in damage and leaves residents without a place to stay.
Seven adults and one baby lived at the home that caught fire this afternoon in the 800 block of Roberts Street in Newport.
Newport Fire Department Capt., Randy Childress said the fire broke out around 2 p.m. One of the residents said he was sleeping when he smelled the smoke. "I look in the room in the back and smoke started coming in the door and I broke the door to make sure no one was over there and the building is on fire and that's all I really know,” said Gustavo Ramos. Picture 30 300x201 House Fire Investigation Cause Electrical
Ramos said fortunately no one was in the building.
Childress said the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second and third floors of the home, “After he left the door open, that allowed it to spread so if there's a lesson learned for the public is if you do see a fire shut the door,” said Childress. As for Ramos he said he wasn’t able to grab anything on his way out after making sure no one else was in the burning home, “I don't have a lot of clothes and stuff and I cook and I have my knives and I lost everything.”
Childress said the home appeared to be a total loss with the fire and smoke damage. He said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical and started in the outlet running the air conditioner. Picture 19 300x276 House Fire Investigation Cause Electrical
It took crews thirty minutes to knock down the flames, and because of the heat extra companies were called in from the Bellevue-Dayton, Fort Thomas, Covington and Southgate fire departments.
No injuries were reported and Red Cross is assisting the residents displaced.
For this reason, Cooper Electric offers a preventive service called CurrentSAFE, to Reduce the Risk of Fire. For more details on how to make your home safe and hazard free, call 513-271-5000.
