A Hurricane Has Come and Gone: Now What?

With hurricane season in full force, it’s imperative to the safety of yourself, your family and your house that you stay informed, educated and safe when it comes to preparing for a storm! Here at PGI, we care, that’s why we’ve been taken the time to cover some hurricane essentials over the past couple of weeks.

So far, we’ve outlined what to do at the start of hurricane season, what supplies everyone should have in their hurricane preparedness kit, what to do once a storm watch or warning has been issued and what to do during a storm.

This week, we’re focusing on what to do after a storm hits.

Just imagine: a hurricane has come and gone. Now what?

  • Continue to listen to the radio and TV for updates
  • Stay alert and prepared for additional rainfall and flooding
  • Keep away from loose or dangling power lines and report them immediately
  • Inspect your home for damage: take photos for insurance purposes
  • Use battery-powered flashlights in the dark—NOT CANDLES
  • Watch your pets closely and keep an eye out for wild animals, especially snakes
  • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water—it may be contaminated
  • Check your refrigerator for spoiled food
  • Assess any vehicle damage and take photos for insurance purposes
  • Wear protective clothing and be extremely cautious when cleaning up debris
  • Use telephones for emergency calls only
  • Never use a generator inside
  • Drive only if absolutely necessary
  • Avoid flooded roads and washed out bridges
  • Keep an eye out for downed electrical lines
  • Check for gas leaks

Do you have any suggestions on how to stay safe during hurricane season? We’d love to hear your thoughts and how we can help.
