Smarter, Not Harder Wire Pulling

When faced with pulling wire in conduit, there is an easier way that requires a lot less effort. Have you ever gotten red in the face do to overexertion? If you've ever tried pulling electrical wires through a conduit that just didn't seem to want to go, you already know what I'm talking about. Pulling wires through conduit can be a challenge, especially if there are a lot of bends in the run. There is a lot of resistance and drag when electrical wire is pulled and the friction between the wire and the conduit walls makes pulling wire a drag!

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has prepared this fact sheet to answer some of the most common questions about reducing emissions from private vehicles.

 

This is an important concern, as cars are a major source of air pollution in the United States. Vehicle emissions contribute to health and environmental problems such as urban smog, air toxics, and global warming. Yet individual driving habits make a big difference in the amount of pollution a car produces.

 

Three easy things you can do to help keep emissions as low as possible are:

 

• Avoid unnecessary driving

• Maintain your car properly

• Drive your car wisely

 

By combining these strategies, you can very effectively reduce the amount your car pollutes. And there are additional benefits — your car will last longer and you will save money.

 

Avoid Unnecessary Driving

The most effective way to reduce emissions from your vehicle is to use it less.

Vehicle travel in this country is doubling every 20 years. Traffic trends that see

more and more cars driving more and more miles will soon begin to outpace

technological progress in vehicle emission control.

 

Several options are available to help you reduce the amount you drive. These

include consolidating trips, telecommuting, carpooling, using public transit, and choosing clean transportation alternatives such as biking or walking.

By planning errands, you will get the most out of time you do spend behind the wheel. For example, call ahead to confirm that the product you need is in stock before you drive to the store. Plan to do several tasks when you go somewhere.

 

Drive to a central location and park. Then walk between nearby destinations.

Ridesharing can be an ideal way to reduce your personal contribution to pollution.

 

Every time you share a ride and eliminate a trip, you help the environment. Try pairing up for trips to work or to social events — even an occasional carpool or ride on public transportation will make a difference.

 

Biking or walking to your destination creates no pollution at all. And you’ll

increase your fitness level at the same time.

LED Lighting For Your Laundry Room

Getting the most out of your laundry room starts with the right lighting fixtures from your Pasadena lighting contractor. Without the right lighting in your laundry room, you might as well be doing your laundry in the closet. Conventional lighting can be too hot for an already warm space. LED Track Lighting

Under cabinet Lighting

When installing under cabinet LED’s, it’s a good idea to space them apart about two feet for optimal light displacement. Recessed Lights

A recessed fixture is commonly employed over the top of each laundry appliance and counter space facing directly down onto the surface. These flush ceiling LED fixtures are fantastic ways to keep your laundry room well lit without the need for exposed fixtures. Recessed lighting comes in various styles but LED recessed lighting works particularly better than a conventional can light in many ways. LED recessed lights are much smaller, yet yield more lumens per watt. Since they produce little heat, they can be installed in areas where conventional recessed lighting cannot. They also use significantly less energy making them a great addition to any mud room.

Hurricane Season Has Begun… Now What?

The 1st of June officially marked the start of hurricane season in Florida. Taking the time to properly prepare before a hurricane hits– and even before the threat of one hitting– can save you time and money while protecting you during a potential storm.

Over the next few weeks, we will outline what to do at the start of hurricane season, once a storm watch has been issued, during the storm and after the storm. To get you started, here are a few tips on what to do right now, at the start of hurricane season:

  • Compile a thorough list of numbers for local emergency public safety and law enforcement officials for both you and your family.
  • Spend some time in the yard and trim up all of your plants, trees, etc., ensuring that you get rid of loose branches. This will prevent your plants from being damaged or causing damage during a storm.
  • Make a binder will all of your insurance and property information. This will help expedite the claims process in the event that your home or property is damaged.
  • Research restoration companies and get quotes for potential repairs. If a storm hits and you have significant damage to your home and need repairs, this will help expedite the process and reduce price gouging after a storm. Plus, since you’re simply shopping around “just in case” a storm hits and you have damage, you’ll be able to take your time and find the best company with the best prices.
  • Research evacuation zones and plan an evacuation route.
  • Take the time to learn the elevation of your property. Is it prone to floods? This will help you prepare for the worst in case of storm surge or tidal flooding.
  • If you live in a high-rise, make a plan in advance and find a spot where you will take shelter that’s on or below the 10th floor.

Measures to Save Electricity Quickly

Measures to Save Electricity Quickly

 

There are two ways to save electricity quickly. First, efficiency improvements can be made to the energy-using equipment such that consumers receive the same services but with less electricity consumed. (These are sometimes called “technical fixes”) In these situations the end user is barely (or not at all) aware that improvements have been made. In the second case, the

energy consumer takes deliberate measures to reduce energy use through changes in operations or procedure which may also cause inconvenience and result in a loss of service or amenity. These are typically called “behavioral” changes.

 

Technical Efficiency Measures

 

The technical measures to save electricity quickly are similar to those used to save electricity slowly except that they may be implemented with greater intensity by combining them with special subsidies or delivery schemes. Three examples are described below.

 

Retrofits—especially retrofits of large, energy-using facilities—are attractive targets during an electricity crisis. About 8% of industrial electricity is used to make compressed air, much of which is lost through leaks (Rosenberg 2003).

 

The compressed air systems therefore represent a source of major savings. California supported inspections and tune-ups of compressed air facilities in factories. Retrofits of eight factories yielded verified savings of 2 MW.

 

Lighting replacements have been the most frequently used retrofit strategy. Replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) was used in Brazil, California, and New Zealand. California consumers installed nearly eight million CFLs during the crisis period, resulting in almost 500 MW of demand reduction (Pang 2003).

 

California cities replaced millions of traffic lights with LED lamps, each saving about 80 watts. California aggressively encouraged consumers to replace older appliances with new units qualifying for the Energy Star endorsement of high efficiency Fuel switching offers large electricity savings.

 

Electricity is often used to heat air or water, especially in the residential sector and in sparsely populated areas.

 

There are numerous opportunities to burn wood, oil, or natural gas directly to obtain the desired heat. Homeowners in Norway and New Zealand, for example, reverted to existing wood stoves and boilers for space and water heating.

 

Fuel switching is an important electricity-savings measure because it removes the homes’ largest electricity-consuming end uses.

 

The greatest benefits from fuel switching will generally occur during shortages caused by cold weather but some measures can also save summer peak power. For example, Brazilians replaced in-line electric shower heaters with gas-fired units, thus saving about 3 kW electrical demand per unit.

 

Effectiveness of Technical Measures

 

Technological modifications require an existing infrastructure in order to deploy the products in a short time, stretching from the manufacturer capable of quickly expanding production to skilled personnel to install them.

 

In most cases, there will not be enough time, or the infrastructure is inadequate, to establish new efficiency improvement and retrofit programs large enough to reduce demand significantly.

 

Norway, for example, addressed its electricity shortage by establishing programs to install heat pumps, energy management systems, and wood pellet stoves.

 

Skilled personnel were overwhelmed and it is unlikely that these measures cut Norway’s electricity demand during the crisis. On the other hand, California already had an established network to deliver its “saving electricity slowly” programs.

 

This network, while still inadequate, was able to rapidly increase activities during the crisis and deliver significant electricity savings. Regions that are vulnerable to temporary electricity shortfalls should consider their programs to “save electricity slowly” as a kind of insurance policy that will also serve as the backbone of a team to save electricity during a crisis.

The Interesting Innovations at Light Fair Were Not LED

At this year’s LFI, I was more impressed with wireless controls and new exotic optical materials than I was with core LED innovation. I’ll save the controls as a future newsletter topic. For now, check out all of the advanced materials companies who are jumping into lighting:
Bayer: Yes, the famous aspirin company. Their advanced materials division displayed these optical materials.
Corning: The glass people. They showed these strange, glowing, hair-thin, glass fiber optics, which they refer to as “Fiber Optic and Remote Source Lighting”.  I have not been able to find additional information online, other than, “Glass fiber that has been specifically designed for lighting applications. The product has uniform brightness, tight bend radius and can be used in long lengths. Both laser or LED based light sources.”
PPG: The famous paint and glass company.  They weren’t at LFI, but they have an advanced materials division with eyes on the lighting market. DOE recently honored them (news release here) for developing lower-cost glass substrates for OLEDs.

Staying Cool, Calm and Collected Once a Hurricane’s Approaching

Hurricane season is in full force and, here at PGI, we want to do what we can to help you prepare accordingly if a storm hits. So far, we’ve covered what to do at the start of hurricane season, as well as laid out some essentials for your hurricane preparedness kit—all good things to know before the there’s a threat of a storm.

In the event that a hurricane hits this season, it is imperative that you prepare in advance to keep both you and your family safe and your home intact. Over the next few weeks, we will outline what to do at the start of hurricane season, once a storm watch has been issued, during the storm and after the storm.

So, what steps should you take once a hurricane is headed toward Florida? First of all, don’t panic! Securing your home and personal belongings should be your top priority. You may only have a day or two to prepare once a watch or warning has been issued, so use your time wisely to ensure you cover any potential issues that can arise during the storm—you’ll thank yourself later!

Here are some quick, simple tips on what to do once a hurricane watch or warning has been issued:

  • Be sure your hurricane preparedness kit is stocked and easily accessible.
  • Bring in or store anything that has the potential to fly away during a storm: patio furniture, trashcans, grill, toys, lawn accessories, etc.
  • Board or shutter all windows. Keep in mind that tape does not prevent windows from breaking.
  • Reinforce garage doors. You could experience significant wind damage in your home if the doors are not properly sealed.
  • Clear loose and clogged rain gutters, spouts, etc.
  • Trim trees and all other shrubbery.
  • Turn off propane tanks.
  • Install straps or additional clips to your roof to secure your home’s frame structure.
  • Make sure you do not have any shingles lose on your roof.
  • Determine how and where to secure your vehicle.

Mandolin and I have spent a couple beautiful days this week upgrading an underground service from 100A to 200A, and re-configuring the metering to support the net output of an upcoming solar PV installation by frequent partner and friends,  Sumintra, LLC.

PECO requires two meters for grid-tied solar PV installations: 1 to measure what they deliver, and the 2nd to measure what you provide to the grid. The difference is what you pay, and PECO settles up any overpayment at the end of each year.

Since I could not make the underground service RMC raceway (‘conduit’) and service entrance raceway connect directly to any arrangement of right- or left-hand meter enclosures, I had to install a wiring trough between the existing pipe work and the new meter configuration. As it turned out, the short conductors of the original installation required a splice box in any case, since they would never have stretched across the generous wiring space of a 200A underground meter enclosure.

Using the trough also allowed me to shift the new meter setup to the right of its previous location, providing proper safe working clearance for this equipment.

Power-Using Devices in U.S. Consume More Than All of Mexico!

A new analysis of devices and equipment commonly found in U.S. homes and businesses concludes that these products, with more than 2 billion in use, consume more energy each year than many large countries use to power their entire economies.

Household devices, such as TVs, computers, and ceiling fans, and commercial equipment, such as elevators, icemakers, and MRI machines, use 7.8 quadrillion Btus each year—which is more than the primary energy use of Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, or 200 other countries, and is more than the amount of oil that the U.S. imports from the Persian Gulf and Venezuela each year. The findings come from a new report, Miscellaneous Energy Loads in Buildings, released today by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE).

Hurricane Season 101: Power Outages


As hurricane season quickly approaches, it’s important to prepare for the worst. If a storm hits and you’re left without power, your electric company will work to safely and quickly restore power. In the meantime, there are a few important things to consider to ensure both you and your family’s safety during a power outage. If the power does go out, keep in mind:

  • Prior to an outage occurring, make sure you have a flashlight and extra batteries handy. Candles can be dangerous and should only be used in case of an absolute emergency. Never light a fire indoors.
  • Turn off or disconnect any lights, appliances or electronics that were in use when the power went out. Be sure to leave one light on so you’re able to notice when power is restored.
  • Steer clear of downed wires and trees. Live wires are an accident waiting to happen.
  • If using a generator, locate it well away from your home, ensuring that the exhaust (which contains carbon monoxide) has no way to easily enter your home through windows or doorways. Using a generator indoors is extremely hazardous and can be fatal.
  • Never, ever drive over downed lines. If a downed line is in or near water, keep your distance. Even a line in the smallest puddle is extremely dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.
  • Do not plug a portable generator into a household outlet. Attempting to power your house by plugging a portable generator into a household outlet can potentially backfeed enough power into the power lines to electrocute a line worker or a neighbor on the same circuit.
