Employment In Electrical Contracting In April — 1990 to 2014

Here’s a table created via the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ do-it-yourself stat thing. EleBlog sought data for PRODUCTION EMPLOYEES (i.e., people who do things — foremen, electricians, apprentices, helpers, other field people) in Electrical Contracting.

What does this tell you?

Lots. Analyze it yourself. The gain from March to April ain’t very impressive, is it (preliminarily, 2,600 people added).

The gain from 2013 April to 2014 April ain’t much, either (7,200 people).

However, the meat here is comparing APRILS going back over the years. The April 2014 number employed is roughly comparable (about equal) to the April 1997 number . . . especially considering the expansion of the economy in that time, and the increasing number of tasks taken on by those in the electrical contracting business these days (i.e., there’s more datacom now, LEDs and lighting retrofits are bigger now, there’s more contracted-out electrical service and maintenance now…..and more).

Plus, you can have more “fun with numbers” here. Interesting angle: The industry hasn’t exceed 600,000 field employees in April in any of the five years (2009-14) just ended. However, in the 15-year period 2000 to 2014, the industry’s field employment EXCEEDED 700,000 FOUR TIMES!!!
