National Zoo in D.C. Now Has SEVEN Elephants

9872306

Three just came in a few weeks ago from Calgary (photo above from Calgary Herald – story, too).

The EleBlog’s proprietor has followed the elephants at the National Zoo since moving from NYC to D.C. in 1979.

Briefly, he lived across the street — literally — from the Zoo, at 3100 Connecticut Ave. That was glorious!

Over that period (35 years), we’ve lost 3 elephants: One African (Nancy, who as huge); one Asian (Toni, who was sick); and one youngster (Kumari, with whom I fell in love). One of the 7 residents now is Kandula — Kumari’s brother (tho they never met).

We were down to 3 elephants just a while ago. We added Bozie, which is one heck of a great name for an elephant, a short while ago.

Now, 3 more.

CAPTIVITY SUCKS for elephants. Being alone in a zoo really sucks. Elephants are social creatures. They need to see and “talk” to other elephants to have a shot at enjoying life.

While captivity sucks — even in a group — these elephants are stuck in the United States. The National Zoo in recent years has spent millions to create a more elephant-friendly habitat for these creatures. I’ve seen it many times. It’s better than the jail that this Zoo had for years (and much better than the prisons that incarcerate elephants all over the U.S.).

For years, I’d go to the Baltimore Zoo — which had a relatively friendly place for elephants to live — and ask myself, “why can’t the National Zoo be more like this?”

Somehow, this question was answered with an exclamation point. See the Elephant Trails PDF (one page) here.

If they gotta be on the wrong side of the ocean, this ain’t a bad place for seven of them to be. Together!
