Is LIGHT The Culprit In Growing Global Obesity Problems?

Maybe what you do for a living (put in the lighting) is actually causing people to life an unhealthy lifestyle. This doesn’t mean you should stop — there are OFF switches with each lighting system!

However, see these:

1. Researchers at UC Irvine

. . . identified more than 600 liver-originated metabolites, which are the chemical substances created by metabolism that sustain and promote cell health and growth. Approximately 60 percent of these metabolites were found to be dependent on the endogenous circadian clock — many more than expected, as only about 15 percent of the body’s genes are regulated by it.

. . . if artificial light messes with a human’s “circadian clock,” that human’s metabolism gets out of balance.

2. A Washington Post report on research from Australia included this:

Wyse notes that our increased exposure to artificial lighting has coincided with the rise of obesity. It’s possible, she suggests, that the disruption of our natural cycle has spurred changes in our bodies and minds that make us more vulnerable to weight gain. The associated shift in eating and sleep habits might exacerbate the situation, Wyse reasons.

In support of her argument, she cites research showing that groups of people who migrate away from equatorial zones, where periods of sunlight and darkness are highly regular, to latitudes where there’s greater fluctuation in daylight tend to be among those most susceptible to weight gain.

. . . there certainly could be other culprits, including all that fructose that food manufacturers cram into just about everything. However, if your metabolism was in balance — as was that of just about everyone on this planet before the light bulb made its debut — maybe you either wouldn’t eat (wouldn’t “need” that) or would not be AWAKE to eat.
