From the Silicon Valley Business Journal’s interview with a KB Homes executive on “smarter homes” — he’s one answer from the guy:
You know, if there was an ah-hah moment for us it was probably when we did the original Net Zero home in Florida. That was something we did with Martha Stewart and a few others, to design the super energy-efficient home of the future. And one of the things we put into that was an energy management system where you could monitor your power usage for your home.
And all the reporters and such coming through and looking at the house, what they were really excited about was not just all the technology we put into the house, but the fact that you could look at a phone and see how the solar cells were producing energy, how the house was consuming power, and how it was using water.
For me at least, this light went off, and I realized that there was real value in making that connection for consumers. We realized that there was more we could be doing to validate clear consumer preferences around monitoring and what they wanted from a house. It was just something that resonated with people – it was something you could touch and feel, that meant something to you.
