In the olden days, as the younger generation may say, power was distributed a little differently than today. The older homes may still have remnants of the older wiring method, knob and tube, that strung single-conductor wires through walls and ceiling attics, spliced together with soldered joints. Having lived in such a home, I can tell you first hand about the service feed that had only 120 volts coming in, yes that's right, only one leg of power, no 240-volt feed for this old timer! The electrical panel was a fuse panel that had a jumper between the two hot connections to allow enough space to attach the circuits needed to run the household circuits. In a word, SCARY! Let's take a look at how is was before and how it is now with electrical distribution.
