Why We Perform Annual Gear Cleaning...

photo11 225x300 Why We Perform Annual Gear Cleaning... A large horse power Motor failed in the facility and the facility replaced the motor and the wiring between the motor and the starter. However, during Cooper Electric's Annual Gear Maintenance and Cleaning we found that the actual source of the problem was a bad electrical termination on the C phas, inside of the distribution gear, which was actually the cause of the large horse power motor failure. Had we not found this and they started up the new motor, in all likelihood they would have destroyed yet another new motor.

A Guide To Choosing Ceiling Lights For Your Bathroom

Have you ever heard the saying ‘a change is as good as a holiday’? There is plenty of truth to this statement; take, for example, changing the ceiling lights in your bathroom – this small act alone could make it feel like a whole new space. There is more to this decision, however, than just walking into a showroom, pointing at a fixture you like and saying ‘that one’. Use this guide to ensure that you are making the right choices for your bathroom in regards to San Gabriel Valley lighting.

Our bathrooms need to be functional above everything else, and the ceiling lights that you ultimately choose for your space will help to determine with this is the case. There is no point in installing a fixture that looks stunning if it prevents you from completing all of the tasks that you would normally undertake in the space, such as shaving and applying make up. This is not to say, however, that homeowners should forget about the aesthetics of their lighting fixtures – instead, it is about finding a balance.

One way to achieve this is by choosing ceiling fixtures that you can easily adjust in both direction and levels of illumination.

  • Illumination: the best way to control the level of illumination in your bathroom is by installing dimmer switchers in conjunction with your ceiling lights. You could also opt for the traditional fixture that includes both heat and normal lights. Whilst this only gives you the choice of two levels of brightness, it may be sufficient for your needs.
  • Direction: the best way to control the direction of lighting in your bathroom is by installing ceiling lights that are mounted into moveable supports. Halogen and LED lights are often mounted in this way, and their fixtures allow you to point the lights in the direction that you need the most illumination (such as over the vanity or the shower stall).

Thankfully, there is plenty of aesthetically pleasing ceiling lights out there that also achieves adequate illumination that can be dimmed or brightened and directed to a certain area. Recessed lights and downlights sit flush with the ceiling and appear as if they’re not even there during the day, whilst a chandelier will make a luxurious and elegant statement. If going for a ‘wow-factor’ fixture, such as a pendant or chandelier, it is recommended that you do the rest of your bathroom as minimalist as possible to avoid overpowering the space.

When to Replace Smoke Alarms

When to Replace Smoke Alarms In the January-February edition of the NFPA Journal, a publication of the National Fire Protection Association - The Authority on Fire, Electrical & Building Safety, writer Amy Lebeau wrote an article entitled "Close to Home - A friends near miss, and a viral challenge to improve smoke-alarm awareness".   In Amy's NFPA article she tells a story of her friend Brook, who recently had a serious fire in her home. And Brook's 2 children smelled the smoke first and got their mom, grandmother and their baby brother out of the house.   The scarier part, was that when Amy heard Brook tell the story, Amy asked Brook if she heard smoke detectors go off in the home, and Brook said, "no". Amy goes on to say that Brook and her husband thought they had adequate coverage with smoke detectors all over the house, in the necessary spots. What they didn't realize is that they did not work.   Smoke detectors need to be changed at minimum every 10 years. A smoke alarms ability to detect smoke becomes less reliable over the years, making it more likely that it won't respond when its needed most!   Amy Lebeau then polled her friends to see if any of them knew about smoke detectors life span of 10 years. None of them did, they were all over the map.   Amy suggests the following. 1. Know the importance of testing your smoke alarms monthly. 2. Have an interconnected smoke alarm system in the home, meaning if one detector alarms the presence of smoke, they all alarm. 3. Have both ionization and photo-electric type smoke alarms, this means having two different detection methods for redundancy and accuracy. 4. Replace them every 10 years minimum. 5. Have a detailed home fire escape plan.   At Cooper Electric we specialize in providing our customers with adequate smoke detector coverage. Our residential department can help you with questions and product information. Add this detail on your next electrical service call, while we are already in your home, to provide you with great value!

Solar Manifesto

Renewable energy and energy saving up-grades – Can America afford not to go Green? America’s increasing dependence on foreign oil and the subsequent instability in many of the oil producing regions of the world has caused a great debate in this country in regards to moving the U.S. into the next generation of energy production [...]

The Sierra Club’s My Generation Campaign has launched a series of ads to highlight record solar job growth in California. The ads will profile images of local clean energy workers and local families that have gone solar as part of a statewide effort to protect the positive economic and environmental benefits that rooftop solar brings to Californian communities. Google & Amazon ‘Unsettle Some Distributors’

Jack Keough has written two articles on how Amazonsupply.com (a relatively new thing) and Google’s “Shopping for Suppliers” (a new thing) are freaking out industrial distributors. One was for Industrial Distribution and the other a blog for TEDmag.com (where I once worked). From the online blog:

Google’s decision to enter the B2B marketplace came only 9 months after Amazon entered the arena. Amazon launched Amazon Supply in April of 2012 and offered 14 different industrial product categories. The site offers more than 600,000 parts and products. It is too early to determine how well Amazon Supply is doing and the Washington-based company is not releasing any information regarding the venture.

Amazon already offers two-day delivery to customers whose invoice totals more than $50 and is being shipped to one address. Under Its “Prime Service” program, users pay a $79 annual fee two-day shipping no matter the cost of the invoice total.

AmazonSupply.com has become a member of several industrial trade associations and its presence has unsettled some distributors.

Jack’s blog noted “The products currently listed on the [Google]  site include circuit breakers, electrical connectors, power converters and inverters, relays, switches and wire.”

U.S. Energy Policy: New Mindset Needed (‘energy security’ narrative must go)

“Government energy programs have been arrogant and, in many respects, irrational as well. Policymakers have often assumed that technological breakthroughs would occur simply because a law said they would happen. Of course, in reality, presidents, members of Congress, bureaucrats in the Department of Energy, or the EPA could not and cannot legislate, mandate, or decree technological advance.”

The U.S. will never have useful energy policies unless and until it abandons a 40-year-old half-truth: We consume more energy (particularly oil) than we produce and thus are “dangerously” dependent on world markets.

The story—what I call the U.S. energy narrative—was created in the 1970s, and was widely accepted because it superficially explained the energy crises.

In the story, the U.S. was the victim of big oil companies who wanted our money and Arab oil sheikhs who not only wanted our money but also sought to use oil as a weapon to affect a change in our international policies. Our standard of living, way of life, and national security were all at stake. But the energy narrative had a potentially happy ending; if dependency was the problem, independence was the answer.

Of course, the story wasn’t just simple; it was simplistic. True, we have bought petroleum on an international market, but that fact does not threaten our national security, our standard of living, or our way of life. Indeed, this was never true.

The dependency fear grew largely out of a misunderstanding of what caused the gasoline lines in the 1970s. It wasn’t the Arab oil embargo, but rather price and allocation controls in the U.S. The embargo was a complete failure as far as the Arabs were concerned.

“Energy Dependence”

Nevertheless, the narrative lives on, and energy independence remains the ultimate end of policy. But what exactly does energy independence mean? From 1973, when Richard Nixon announced Project Independence, the idea itself has had multiple meanings (I’ve counted at least a dozen) or rather no real meaning since it means what anyone wants it to mean.

“Energy independence” has in fact become a catch phrase for politicians from both parties. From 2001 to 2012, for example, members of Congress uttered the words “energy independence” about 2,500 times in speeches and debates; every president and presidential candidate since Nixon has bought into the dependency story and advocated something or other labeled energy independence; forty years on, confusion and failure notwithstanding, the narrative and its solution remain.

But so far from providing guidance for energy policy, the narrative is a barrier to any kind of useful energy policies. It is impossible to create a coherent policy when policymakers have a different definition of the goal, and energy policy in the United States has been notable for its incoherence. What we get, in fact, are programs that are economically illiterate, poorly defined, unmeasurable, and often grandiose to the point of absurdity. They might sound good, but waste billions of dollars and produce nothing of value.

Policy has typically reflected the narrative: To break our dependency, we’ve been told of the need for alternative (domestic) energy technologies. According to policymakers, the U.S. obviously can’t rely on markets since they seem not to have noticed that domestic fossil fuel resources are limited (and lately, also bad for the planet) and that we are being held hostage by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

Of course, a switch from fossil fuels to new technologies would change so many facets of daily life that it would mean a social as well as technological transformation. Synfuels, breeder reactors, ethanol, fusion, wind, solar: all have been touted over the decades as panaceas that would solve America’s energy “problem,” as they defined it, and at the same time would alter the way we think and live. [1]

Government energy programs have been arrogant and, in many respects, irrational as well. Policymakers have often assumed that technological breakthroughs would occur simply because a law said they would happen. Of course, in reality, presidents, members of Congress, bureaucrats in the Department of Energy or the EPA could not and cannot legislate, mandate, or decree technological advance.

Changing the Narrative

As long as officials think energy policy must change the world, failure and waste will continue. Energy policymaking needs a different mind-set.

Policy requires modesty – modesty in understanding of what can actually be accomplished. Modesty is perhaps a foreign idea among elected officials. But a modest approach is the only way to develop policies related to energy resources and technologies that have a real chance to do some good.

No more panaceas, no more transformations of American life: those inevitably take us nowhere.

In subsequent posts I’ll sketch out what modest energy policies would mean.

—————–

[1] Even the expansion of natural gas production, certainly good news in itself, has morphed for some policymakers into the latest panacea that with the “right” government programs will provide endless, cheap American energy and make us, of course, energy independent.

Dr. Peter Grossman, professor of economics at Butler University, is author of the just-released U.S. Energy Policy and the Pursuit of Failure. His previous post, “Ignorant Arrogance: Energy ‘Market Failure’ Revisited,” was published on May 2, 2013.

Using Wall Lights To Highlight Your Home’s Decor

If you have filled your San Gabriel Valley home with treasures and artifacts that you would love to display to guests and visitors, perhaps the installation of some well-placed wall lights could be the solution to all your problems. With a number of unusual and attractive designs available, lights that are installed on the walls of your home could be very beneficial in accentuating a picture, fireplace, nook, plant or other architectural element.

But why are wall lights so useful in highlighting the decorative features of our home? For one, they are known for being highly suited to the provision ambient lighting, which looks nice but isn’t overly useful for completing tasks by. For two, the way in which light is cast out from these fixtures is perfect for illuminating decorative elements that are placed on or around the walls of your home.

In the bathroom, it is essential that you have proper lighting installed by your San Gabriel Valley Lighting electrician, so that you can complete the daily tasks of shaving and applying makeup. Wall sconces, when fitted with the proper globes, are highly effective at casting a more natural appearing illumination across the space. They also avoid the creation of dark shadows, which can make a person appear tired or unwell.

In the dining room, wall lights are used to provide that finishing touch by adding an understated illumination to the walls (which are often left in shadow by ceiling fixtures). They are quite useful in making a space feel bright and cozy rather than dark and dingy, which makes for a much more pleasant dining experience.

In the living room, the correct sort of illumination is essential for setting the mood of your ‘relaxation space’. Wall sconces are widely used in these areas for drawing attention to particular elements of the room, such as a fireplace or a picture, and they are also suitable for lighting around the television without casting an annoying glare across the screen.

In the hallway, it is important that you get the amount of light right, as these rooms are renowned for being the darkest areas of the home. Well-spaced wall lights will effortlessly provide adequate illumination that really opens the space up and banishes those dark corners.

House Fire Investigation - Cause Electrical

NEWPORT, Ky. — July 28, 2013 - A house fire caused 100,000 dollars in damage and leaves residents without a place to stay.
Seven adults and one baby lived at the home that caught fire this afternoon in the 800 block of Roberts Street in Newport.
Newport Fire Department Capt., Randy Childress said the fire broke out around 2 p.m. One of the residents said he was sleeping when he smelled the smoke. "I look in the room in the back and smoke started coming in the door and I broke the door to make sure no one was over there and the building is on fire and that's all I really know,” said Gustavo Ramos.
Ramos said fortunately no one was in the building.
Childress said the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second and third floors of the home, “After he left the door open, that allowed it to spread so if there's a lesson learned for the public is if you do see a fire shut the door,” said Childress. As for Ramos he said he wasn’t able to grab anything on his way out after making sure no one else was in the burning home, “I don't have a lot of clothes and stuff and I cook and I have my knives and I lost everything.”
Childress said the home appeared to be a total loss with the fire and smoke damage. He said the cause of the fire appeared to be electrical and started in the outlet running the air conditioner.
It took crews thirty minutes to knock down the flames, and because of the heat extra companies were called in from the Bellevue-Dayton, Fort Thomas, Covington and Southgate fire departments.
No injuries were reported and Red Cross is assisting the residents displaced.
For this reason, Cooper Electric offers a preventive service called CurrentSAFE, to Reduce the Risk of Fire. For more details on how to make your home safe and hazard free, call 513-271-5000.
