North American’s Energy Boom (will Mexico join?)

“The energy boom in North America demonstrates that competition and technology are powerful forces; indeed, markets work. When the price system is allowed to work, technology is brought to bear on supply (more) and demand (less) to the benefit of economies everywhere.”

Gone are the days of growing scarcity in the North American oil patch–and increasing petroleum imports from unstable regimes overseas.

The new consensus–that North American energy is plentiful and will remain so to at least the year 2040–is not based on hopes and hype. Over the last five years North America has experienced a true energy revolution, and it is continuing apace.

U.S. oil production is at its highest level since 1992, at over 7 million barrels per day (mmb/d), and Canada’s output exceeded 4 mmb/d at the end of last year, its highest level ever. Both are expected to continue to rise, with the U.S. topping Saudi Arabian production of over 10 mmb/d by 2020, and Canadian production rising to over 6 mmb/d.

While the U.S. will remain a net crude oil importer for now (it last was a net exporter in the mid-1940s), its dependence has already fallen by half, and most of its imports in the future will come from Canada.

The story for natural gas is even more pronounced, as production in both countries is booming, driving benchmark Henry Hub gas prices to low levels of about $3.50 per MMBtu. Facilities built to import liquefied natural gas (LNG) are now under consideration for conversion to export it. The U.S. is on its way to becoming an energy superpower, with energy supplies no longer considered limited, foreign, and finite.

In Spite of, Not Because of, Government

These supply-side developments are all home-grown by the private sector, and owe nothing to U.S. federal government policy, which in fact slowed the leasing and permitting processes on federal lands and waters in recent years rather than encouraging them.

In response to the 2008 world-oil price peak of $140 per barrel (and today’s $90), markets responded as Economics 101 would suggest. Five years later, with the successful application of advanced technologies such as hydraulic fracturing, 3-D seismic imaging, horizontal drilling, oil sands extraction, and deep-water successes, U.S. oil production is 40% higher than in 2008, while shale gas production is now 37% of U.S. gas output, up from 2% in 2000.

On the demand side, U.S. and Canadian oil consumption has been flat, in part due to the fragile macroeconomy of recent years, and is expected to remain that way. As a result, U.S. oil imports have fallen from 60% of consumption to 40%, and natural gas imports from Canada are falling under pressure from rising U.S. gas output.

U.S. Update

Our new era stimulates a collective sigh of relief, as low natural gas prices stimulate industry along with jobs creation. Yet there is a global market for LNG, and gas exports should not be prohibited by short-sighted U.S. government policy. For the first time in history, U.S. natural gas now supplies (by pipeline) about 16% of Ontario’s gas demand.

On the oil side, U.S. refining has been turned upside down, as rising inland production needs more outlets to reach refining centers on the coasts, initially built for imported crudes. The patchwork of inland pipelines is being expanded, but in the meantime over 500,000 b/d are being carried by rail and barge to refining centers.

Full pipelines and transportation bottlenecks produce gluts in areas without refineries, resulting in price discounts on both U.S. Bakken (North Dakota) and Canadian crudes. The boom in production in the lower 48 states is likely to defer interest in development in U.S. Arctic resources.

While U.S. dependence on imported oil has fallen dramatically, the United States is nonetheless likely to remain a net oil importer of more than a third of its demand, given the breadth of its land mass and the economics of pipeline versus tanker deliveries. In this regard, the U.S. is most lucky to have a prolific producer to its north looking to keep its prime oil customer.

Canadian Update

For Canada, oil production is surging, and is expected to reach 6.6 mmb/d in the future. Up to now, the U.S. was its primary customer, taking 99% of Canada’s crude and products exports of close to 3 mmb/d.

But the resurgence of U.S. oil production clouds Canada’s future export picture. Without U.S. approval of the Keystone XL pipeline – for the dealy of which the Obama administration has run out of excuses – Canadian oil exports will be forced to seek other markets, either European or Asian, and years will pass before pipeline connections are sited, approved, and built.

In natural gas, the U.S. has been the sole purchaser of Canadian gas exports, but these are dropping as U.S. gas production rises. Canada, like the U.S., is looking to develop LNG export markets. The plethora of energy in both the U.S. and the provincial Canadian land mass is likely to postpone indefinitely the development of resources in the Canadian Arctic or the Mackenzie Valley.

In fact, the Energy Information Administration sees the U.S. becoming a substantial exporter of natural gas to Canada in the future. That the U.S. would ever be a large natural gas exporter, and to Canada of all destinations, was beyond imagination only a few years ago. This is testimony to both the richness of the US Marcellus shale gas deposits and to the gas demand centers in eastern Canada.

Mexico Update

For socialized Mexico, the energy revolution has yet to take off, despite the country’s rich deposits.

With proper incentives, Mexico could become an oil and gas powerhouse. Its biggest problems are above ground, in terms of the politics and history surrounding the state oil company PEMEX. The company’s production is declining, starved as it is for capital investment; without investment, Mexico could turn into a crude oil importer.

The new government recognizes this as a “signature issue,” and the expectation is that while PEMEX will remain in the hands of the state, it will be allowed to seek development relations with interested foreign oil and gas companies to offset the declines in oil production and to develop shale oil and gas deposits, of which it has many.

The country is currently a net crude oil exporter and a net natural gas importer. Mexico presently exports over 80% of its total crude exports to the U.S., all by ship, since there are no oil pipeline connections. But it is a growing importer of gasoline and diesel, which, if it exploits its undeveloped oil resources, it could provide locally.

As to natural gas, Mexico continues to increase its pipeline gas imports from the U.S., as well as to buy LNG from a variety of other countries. Since many of Mexico’s promising undeveloped oil and gas resources lie in the north close to Texas, a Transboundary Hydrocarbon Agreement between the US and Mexico to guide development has been proposed, but as yet is unsigned.

Given the boom in U.S. oil and gas production, Mexico is unlikely to remain a strong oil exporter to the US, and will have to seek future customers elsewhere.

North America to the World

The renaissance of the North American energy sector is reshaping the world’s energy landscape with far-reaching implications for energy flows and geopolitics. For example, already oil imports from Nigeria and Venezuela to the U.S. are dropping.

Middle East oil exports are competing with Nigerian and North African crudes in Europe, which puts downward pressure on the price of Russian oil exports to Europe. Asian gas demand will be met in the future possibly by both U.S. and Canadian new LNG exports, as well as by existing suppliers and new Russian and Australian LNG shipments.

The energy boom in North America demonstrates that competition and technology are powerful forces; indeed, markets work. When the price system is allowed to work, technology is brought to bear on supply (more) and demand (less) to the benefit of economies everywhere.

In the case of the U.S., oil imports from non-North American sources have fallen precipitously, with implications for both energy import vulnerability and geopolitics. Canada and Mexico, if they are to sustain exports, prices, and returns to production, need more transport infrastructure and need to seek alternative export markets.

Moreover, if Mexico is to ensure its energy future, it will have to open oil and gas exploration/production to economic forces, which means a change in the way PEMEX operates. From a U.S. policy perspective, Washington needs to change its import-focused strategies to recognize the value of both oil and gas exports. This means approving the Keystone XL pipeline, opening federal lands, and approving LNG export plans.

At the same time, increased U.S.oil and gas production distresses fossil-fuel foes who once thought that “peak oil” and “peak gas” would result in naturally increasing prices and greater conservation. For these pressure groups, it is game-on for a carbon tax or some other way to reflect environmental externalities. The oil and gas industry, meanwhile, will factor this risk into their exploration and production budgets in a world where politics as much or more than geology drives supply and demand.

How Electrical Things Go Wrong?

When thinking about an electrical system that has been in place in your home since it was built, the first thing that comes to mind is, why is this happening now? What changed between when the builder put the electrical system in place, and now?

There are other things in life, like our vehicles, which the concept of use and life cycle are easier to understand. You get your oil changed every 3,000 miles. You put gas in your car weekly to keep it fueled up to be able to operate. You check the air in your tires. You change the wiper blades. These things are very apparent to maintain because most of us drive our vehicles every day. We understand that over the course of time, with owning a vehicle that maintenance issues will come up. Things wear out over time during the duration of their life cycles.

When thinking about electrical systems in your home, it's not as easily understood. The average person does not know OHMs law, nor understand the effects that take place when OHMs law is in place, in say... a loose connection in your electrical system.

Homeowners wonder, if this was installed when my home was built, what is causing it to malfunction now? There are 4 reasons for electrical hazards to pop up over the course of a life cycle of a home, and what precipitates the call to an electrician to fix the problem.

1. Workmanship. Unfortunately, the number one reason electrical components malfunction over time, is because the person who installed it originally might have made a mistake. Maybe they did not torque the screw down to specifications. Maybe the breaker wasn't sized properly for the load. Maybe the wire was undersized. Maybe they ran one circuit where the demand should have called for multiple circuits. The bottom line is that the workmanship of the installer, could have compromised the installation from the beginning. And over time, through improperly installed electrical work, problems show themselves because of electricity flowing through.

2. Corrosion/Water intrusion. A common problem that is completely bizarre to homeowners is water, literally spilling out of your electrical panel. People call in astonishment that water has infiltrated their electrical panel. And rightfully so. Water and electricity don't mix. How the water gets in? It travels along the Service Entrance cable, that is coming from the meter on the outside of the house. Herein, the workmanship discussed in number one, has a major role. How did the installer drill the hole? Did he caulk the opening? Is the cable's protective jacket cracked, and letting water in? This is actually a very common problem. Once the water is gone however, the damage left behind from corrosion, still persists, it will continue to worsen.

3. Load. Today's homes have more loads being pulled through them then ever before. Poor workmanship, plus corrosion on an aging electrical systems, will lead to more problems.

4. Wear and Tear. Your kid unplugging the vacuum cleaner from around the corner? Not good, over time it will disturb the wiring and screws on the inside of the box and device. How many times have you flipped that switch that's not working right? How often do you think the jiggling of a switch can take before it becomes bad? Before it loosen connections in the box the switch is in or on the screws? The wear and tear on these things adds up to problems.

To DIY Or Not To DIY: That Is The Question

Everyone loves a DIY project.

With search engines at our fingertips, it seems as though no project is too difficult to take on– especially when step-by-step instructions are available, right? Wrong! Any project involving electricity should be approached with extreme caution.

Always keep in mind that electrical work is governed by codes– from wires to cable connectors– and usually exist for a safety-related reason. Code violations can be potentiality hazards; not to mention, hard on your wallet.

Yes, replacing an old ceiling fan or oulet, installing a dimmer switch and changing a dead light bulb are all relatively safe and easy DIY projects, but most at-home electrical tasks should be left to the professionals.

Here are some common home upgrades that you should never, ever attempt yourself:

  • Running new cables or wires for a new outlet
  • Installing new electrical circuits
  • Installing major appliances on existing circuits

When in doubt, always call an a professional. Aside from the obvious risks of electrocution, you may also run the risk of costly repairs or an incomplete project. Let us know the task at hand and sit back, relax and watch us do the work for you!

Measures to Save Electricity Quickly

Measures to Save Electricity Quickly

There are two ways to save electricity quickly. First, efficiency improvements can be made to the energy-using equipment such that consumers receive the same services but with less electricity consumed. (These are sometimes called “technical fixes”) In these situations the end user is barely (or not at all) aware that improvements have been made. In the second case, the

energy consumer takes deliberate measures to reduce energy use through changes in operations or procedure which may also cause inconvenience and result in a loss of service or amenity. These are typically called “behavioral” changes.

Technical Efficiency Measures

The technical measures to save electricity quickly are similar to those used to save electricity slowly except that they may be implemented with greater intensity by combining them with special subsidies or delivery schemes. Three examples are described below.

Retrofits—especially retrofits of large, energy-using facilities—are attractive targets during an electricity crisis. About 8% of industrial electricity is used to make compressed air, much of which is lost through leaks (Rosenberg 2003).

The compressed air systems therefore represent a source of major savings. California supported inspections and tune-ups of compressed air facilities in factories. Retrofits of eight factories yielded verified savings of 2 MW.

Lighting replacements have been the most frequently used retrofit strategy. Replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) was used in Brazil, California, and New Zealand. California consumers installed nearly eight million CFLs during the crisis period, resulting in almost 500 MW of demand reduction (Pang 2003).

California cities replaced millions of traffic lights with LED lamps, each saving about 80 watts. California aggressively encouraged consumers to replace older appliances with new units qualifying for the Energy Star endorsement of high efficiency Fuel switching offers large electricity savings.

Electricity is often used to heat air or water, especially in the residential sector and in sparsely populated areas.

There are numerous opportunities to burn wood, oil, or natural gas directly to obtain the desired heat. Homeowners in Norway and New Zealand, for example, reverted to existing wood stoves and boilers for space and water heating.

Fuel switching is an important electricity-savings measure because it removes the homes’ largest electricity-consuming end uses.

The greatest benefits from fuel switching will generally occur during shortages caused by cold weather but some measures can also save summer peak power. For example, Brazilians replaced in-line electric shower heaters with gas-fired units, thus saving about 3 kW electrical demand per unit.

Effectiveness of Technical Measures

Technological modifications require an existing infrastructure in order to deploy the products in a short time, stretching from the manufacturer capable of quickly expanding production to skilled personnel to install them.

In most cases, there will not be enough time, or the infrastructure is inadequate, to establish new efficiency improvement and retrofit programs large enough to reduce demand significantly.

Norway, for example, addressed its electricity shortage by establishing programs to install heat pumps, energy management systems, and wood pellet stoves.

Skilled personnel were overwhelmed and it is unlikely that these measures cut Norway’s electricity demand during the crisis. On the other hand, California already had an established network to deliver its “saving electricity slowly” programs.

This network, while still inadequate, was able to rapidly increase activities during the crisis and deliver significant electricity savings. Regions that are vulnerable to temporary electricity shortfalls should consider their programs to “save electricity slowly” as a kind of insurance policy that will also serve as the backbone of a team to save electricity during a crisis.

Best Electrical Safety Tips For Your San Gabriel Valley Home

Every California home has electricity flowing through it and normally safe however, if you have young children or are planning to do work on you home, you must make sure you have some basic electrical safety training and electrical safety rules. Electricity is a part of modern society however without the proper precautions electricity can kill very easily. This article will give you some very basic electrical safety tips.

Small children love to learn by exploring and touching. Parents and caregivers must diligently remove any electrical hazards in their home and keep their children safe. First remove or repair any loose electrical lines. If you have loose electrical sockets or frayed wires protruding from the wall, you should have the issues fixed by your trained San Gabriel Valley electrician. Also, replace any frayed power cords on electrical appliances you use. In some cases you can have a frayed power cord repaired but you should also consider replacing the appliance completely.

After any electrical wiring issues in your home have been repaired, take some time to learn about electricity and what to do in the case of an emergency. When there are small children in your home you must know what to do in the case of an electrical emergency. Purchase a training DVD that will explain electrical safety in an easy to understand detail. If learning from a DVD is not for you, some communities offer electrical safety training for free through the electrical power company. The goal of learning about electrical safety is to not become an expert in electricity or electrical repair but to gain enough knowledge to be able to react in an emergency.

Now that you have training and the most pressing electrical hazards in your house resolved. Start childproofing your home. Cover all electrical sockets with plastic electrical socket covers to prevent your child from poking items into the sockets. Be sure that the covers you choose to use cannot be removed easily by your children and are large enough that they are not a choking hazard.

Finally, prepare for the possibility of an electrical fire by purchasing a fire extinguisher specially designed for electrical fires. Water should never be used on an electrical fire because the water has the potential to cause the fire to spread. Knowing about electrical safety means being prepared for the possibility of an electrical fire by purchasing a chemical fire extinguisher and checking the charge on your extinguisher yearly.

While chances are you will never need to use your electrical safety training or use your fire extinguisher the knowledge of electrical safety tips in the home is vital to protecting your children. Take the time to take electricity and electrical safety rule serious and your house will be happy and healthy for years to come.

As have said earlier, there are only a few basic steps in trying to grow your own tomatoes. And depending on how well you take each aspect in consideration, it will pretty much determine how long to grow tomatoes. You can always ask your neighbors if you seem to lack such information or you can find yourself a guide that you can now find online these days.

One of the things you might want to have in order to produce the best tomatoes is the proper lighting. As a matter of fact, the more you expose your crops to sunlight, the better they are going to get. However, make sure not to place them in a place where wind is abundant.

Another thing to consider is the soil you are planning to plant your tomatoes in. The best thing to do is to sterilize your soil from time to time. It is recommended to do so twice every season. What is important is that your soil is free from various infections or diseases that could affect your plants.

It is also important to keep your soil moist at most times. These are just some of the things to consider. Why learn how long to grow tomatoes if you could only learn the best ways to care for them instead. Doing so will surely get you there – an unlimited supply of fresh tomatoes.

Bogus Baloney Graphic

I read the Archdruid Report. Now, I’m not a Druid (the guy who writes it is, of course). Here’s a graphic he posted (to his 3/20 piece) — and his comments, and mine:

crude-production-v-net-imports

Looks good, eh? WAIT.

From the Archdruid:

You can find this graph in various forms in quite a few places in the American media just now. You’ll notice that, at first glance, it appears to be showing domestic production of petroleum here in the US rising up inexorably to equal domestic consumption, and leaving imports far in the dust.

Take another look, and you’ll see that the line tracking domestic production uses a different scale, on the right side of the chart, that just happens to make current production look three times bigger than it is.

EleBlog take:

What’s important, in addition to the graphic and the raw facts as delineated above, is the specific incident:

  • Someone created this baloney, with the sure knowledge that U.S. citizens are data-ignorant and can’t read a freaking graph.
  • A group of someones then proceeded to USE the damn thing.
  • The “call” that this specific emperor is buck naked came not from the NY Times, or Washington Post, or HuffPost or Salon or the Democratic Party . . . but on an obscure blog.

Make no mistake about it: The Archdruid is CORRECT on this. We are being — quite intentionally — MISLED. The media is complicit.

Believe nothing that you hear, read . . . or anything you have come to think based on what you’ve heard or read.

How to Pick A San Gabriel Valley Generator for Your Home

San Gabriel Valley generators are your run-to when there are power interruptions. Not having enough electricity could really make it hard for a household to work as normally as it would want, and this is why it’s important that you choose a generator that is most compatible for your home and your energy requirements. What should you consider when choosing a home generator?

  1. Price. When choosing a generator, you should consider just how much you could spend. Even if you really need a generator, it wouldn’t do you much good to spend money that you couldn’t earn. Portable home generators could cost as much as $4,000, but there would be others which could just cost less than $1,000 too. Decide on your budget before everything else.
  2. Size. What type of generator should you use? There are portable generators which are normally small. Home standby generators are used to power up a whole home in case it is needed. And there are those commercial generators which could power up a place a lot bigger than just a house. The size could usually tell you how long a generator can run too.
  3. Fuel Type. There are many types of generators depending on what fuel they use to generate electricity. There are those which are powered by gas, there are those powered by LPG, there are some that works on diesel, and others work on natural gas. There are advantages and disadvantages of choosing one over the other, including price and availability, and you should figure out about them with your professional contractor. We are the only ones who could help you choose the right San Gabriel Valley generators, as well as help you install them safely and properly.
  4. Load. Of course, you’d have to deal with choosing a home generator by the electricity load that you’re about to put into it. Knowing just how much wattage something needs to start and keep running is important if you want to know how powerful you need your generator to be. Make a list of all the things you want to start and run with a power generator, and make sure that you cover all the necessary appliances and equipment first. Your fridge, freezer, heater, pump and water system, gas furnace and fans, stove, lighting, washing machine, radio, computer system and many others could very well be considered as important and necessary. All of these things would require higher starting wattages, but all of them would run on significantly lower wattage.

If you’re thinking about installing a home generator by yourself, then you might want to take a step back and think twice about what you’re about to do. It could be very dangerous to deal with things that you don’t have much knowledge about. If you know a thing or two about generators, decide if they’re enough to help you safely and properly install it in your home. If you’re having second thoughts, it would always be better to have generators installed by your professional San Gabriel Valley electrician.

Smoke Detectors

In most cases you have less than five minutes to escape in a house fire which is why being alerted immediately is important. Smoke detectors should be placed in every bedroom, every common hallway and in any change of ceiling height greater than 12 inches. Batteries should be checked monthly and changed often. Los Angeles Electrical – Understanding EV Cars

Electric vehicles are one of the hottest new trends in the automotive industry. The idea is very appealing—According to ChargePoint, EV drivers save over 2.4 million gallons of gas annually and this will most likely only grow as popularity continues to increase. Going green is a very admirable goal. If you have considered the idea [...]

Using Wall Lights To Highlight Your Home’s Decor

If you have filled your San Gabriel Valley home with treasures and artifacts that you would love to display to guests and visitors, perhaps the installation of some well-placed wall lights could be the solution to all your problems. With a number of unusual and attractive designs available, lights that are installed on the walls of your home could be very beneficial in accentuating a picture, fireplace, nook, plant or other architectural element.

But why are wall lights so useful in highlighting the decorative features of our home? For one, they are known for being highly suited to the provision ambient lighting, which looks nice but isn’t overly useful for completing tasks by. For two, the way in which light is cast out from these fixtures is perfect for illuminating decorative elements that are placed on or around the walls of your home.

In the bathroom, it is essential that you have proper lighting installed by your San Gabriel Valley Lighting electrician, so that you can complete the daily tasks of shaving and applying makeup. Wall sconces, when fitted with the proper globes, are highly effective at casting a more natural appearing illumination across the space. They also avoid the creation of dark shadows, which can make a person appear tired or unwell.

In the dining room, wall lights are used to provide that finishing touch by adding an understated illumination to the walls (which are often left in shadow by ceiling fixtures). They are quite useful in making a space feel bright and cozy rather than dark and dingy, which makes for a much more pleasant dining experience.

In the living room, the correct sort of illumination is essential for setting the mood of your ‘relaxation space’. Wall sconces are widely used in these areas for drawing attention to particular elements of the room, such as a fireplace or a picture, and they are also suitable for lighting around the television without casting an annoying glare across the screen.

In the hallway, it is important that you get the amount of light right, as these rooms are renowned for being the darkest areas of the home. Well-spaced wall lights will effortlessly provide adequate illumination that really opens the space up and banishes those dark corners.

An electrician in Miami can install a flat screen, fan or smoke detector

Electrician Fan InstallationIf you are installing a new device, you want a licensed electrical contractor in Miami to hang it or do the wiring. If you try and do it yourself, the device may become unstable and possibly fall over and break into a million little pieces.

Even worse, you run the risk of messing up the job of the wiring. A bad wiring job can lead to fires that burn down your building or home and put the lives of countless others in immediate danger. Is it really worth trying to save a few bucks by wasting your whole day doing a job that might eventually cost you a lot more. Besides the obvious risk of human life, a fire can destroy many things like photos, clothes and sentimental items that can not be replaced.

Also, if you go the cheap route, the electrician in Miami may not even have insurance or be licensed.  You might even think that you did the right thing by hiring a professional, but they could very well be some fly by night con artist company that has no idea what they are doing and are not concerned with the your safety. They will give you the lowest price just to get a quick buck. Many companies operate like this because they shut down and just change names.  We have been in business for a long time and not going anywhere! Why We Perform Annual Gear Cleaning...

photo11 225x300 Why We Perform Annual Gear Cleaning... A large horse power Motor failed in the facility and the facility replaced the motor and the wiring between the motor and the starter. However, during Cooper Electric's Annual Gear Maintenance and Cleaning we found that the actual source of the problem was a bad electrical termination on the C phas, inside of the distribution gear, which was actually the cause of the large horse power motor failure. Had we not found this and they started up the new motor, in all likelihood they would have destroyed yet another new motor.

How To Choose The Best Laminate Flooring For A Great Effect

After deciding to replace the current flooring with laminate flooring it is a good idea to do research on the different types of laminate and their associated costs. The more flashy the design and the better the features, the higher the cost will become. With enough searching around though anyone can find a great price on the type of laminate flooring that is wanted, whether it be in a store or through a retail outlet.

Choosing the right type of laminate can be a tricky decision. There are many different types and each are categorized by the textures they replicate and how thick the flooring is. The higher end flooring also comes with non slip and non scratch surfaces. Though these are nice they do come with a higher price tag.

After the decision is made to replace the flooring, it is always good to ensure that the quantity you require is correct. This is to assure that the amount of cutting and returning of products is lessened. Whenever cutting is necessary though, creating a floor plan is a great idea as it can show just where specific cuts will need to be made. If cutting is necessary, it will benefit all involved to have the appropriate tools.

If trimming is necessary the right tools can be very useful. The most important tools are the coping saw and rubber mallets since they allow the laminate to be placed as it is needed. Another important instrument is the measuring tape as it allows whoever is installing the flooring to get the best fit possible.

After choosing the extra features that are wanted for the flooring the next step is to choose the finish of the laminate. There are many different types of finish including all of those that are made to resemble hardwoods such as mahogany, cedar and cherry. There are also specialty finishes but these may run higher on the pay scale than normally bought finishes.

The last major item that will affect the price is the durability of the product. The higher the quality of the laminate, the more money that will ultimately be paid for the product. The more money that is paid for the laminate will also ultimately show more durability over time than the lesser-priced flooring.

With the major topics of laminate flooring covered, it goes to show that placing laminate flooring is a very good choice. With its especially low price, it is a good all around substitute for hardwood floors. Laminate is not only good on its looks it is great for its durability and style choices that can brighten any room.

Lights On! Human Achievement Hour Tomorrow Night (March 23: 8:30–9:30 pm EST)

“If we really want a sustainable future for all of humanity and our planet, we shouldn’t plunge ourselves back into darkness. Tackling climate change by turning off the lights and eating dinner by candlelight smacks of the “let them eat cake” approach to the world’s problems that appeals only to well-electrified, comfortable elites.”

- Bjørn Lomborg, “Earth Hour Is a Colossal Waste of Time—and Energy,” Slate, March 17, 2013.

For many years, the Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) has deftly combined scholarship with activism–and a dash of humor–in the pursuit of liberty. Many of their scholars, such as Marlo Lewis at this site, are leaders in their respective fields.

Several years ago, they responded to turn-out-the-lights Earth Hour with turn-on-the-lights Human Achievement Hour.  And now comes 2013. “On March 23, some people will be sitting in the dark to express their ‘vote’ for action on global climate change,” CEI states.

Instead, you can join CEI and the thousands of people around the world who will be celebrating Human Achievement Hour (HAH). Leave your lights on to express your appreciation for the inventions and innovations that make today the best time to be alive and the recognition that future solutions require individual freedom not government coercion.

CEI press release, “Capitalists Do It With The Lights On: Human Achievement Hour 2013,” by Michelle Minton, succinctly makes a case for optimism, volunteerism, and reason:

It’s that time of year again when we at the Competitive Enterprise Institute celebrate the innovative power of humanity and demonstrate our commitment to protecting the rights of individuals against government action that would limit our ability to use earth’s resources and thus hinder human progress. We call this celebration Human Achievement Hour (HAH).

On Saturday, March 23 at 8:30 pm (local time), some people, businesses and governments around the world will choose to sit in the dark for one hour as a symbolic gesture to take action against climate change. The organizers of Earth Hour say that they no longer expect energy use to actually drop during the hour, but instead see it as a way for people to show their commitment to reducing energy use and taking action beyond the hour.

It’s absolutely every person’s right to decide if they want to conserve energy for whatever reason; they are free to sit in the dark as long as they want. However, it should not be their right to impose their beliefs or opinions on others.

And that is what is at the heart of the environmentalist movement. While many participants in Earth Hour sincerely want a cleaner environment — a desire most of us share — the environmentalist movement whether implicitly or explicitly seeks to clamp down on human progress by reducing energy consumption whether through regulation and taxation. They want to make fossil fuels, which they see as dirty, more expensive to encourage the use of renewable “greener” energies.

Despite any good intentions, the ultimate result of environmentalist policies is not a healthier, cleaner environment. Instead we will see a population that is sicker and poorer. The only way we achieve technology that is “greener” is by building on older “dirtier” technology. As we make it harder and more expensive for those in the business of creating new technologies, all we do is slow progress and make it that much longer to reach more environmentally friendly solutions.

Even worse, as we make energy more expensive we make everything more expensive. As a result individuals have less money and less time. And it’s hard to worry about the environment when you’re focused on putting food on the table, keeping your job, raising your kids, paying for your home, etc.

At 8:30 pm on March 23rd, we at CEI will not turn our lights out. In fact, we’ll be throwing a party to which you are all invited. Wherever you are in the world, we invite you to take part in Human Achievement Hour, a celebration of individual freedom and appreciation of the accomplishments and innovations of humans throughout history.

To celebrate participants need only spend the 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm hour on March 31 enjoying the benefits of human innovation: gather with friends under the glow of electric lights, listen to music, read a book, drink a beer, or call a loved one on the phone.

HAH celebrants can also utilize one of man’s greatest achievements, the Internet, to join CEI’s in-house party, which will be streaming live on the Web at www.cei.org/hah beginning at 8 pm, and you can use the chat function to tell us how you are celebrating human achievement in your neighborhood.

See how far we’ve come.

2013 Energy-Saving Tax Credits: Part 2 of 3

Homeowners taking advantage of renewable energy can qualify for savings of up to 30 percent of equipment cost; rentals and second homes are not eligible for these Consumer Energy Efficiency Tax Credits.

Over next week, PGI will complete this series with part 3. To view part 1, click here.

Tax Credit #2: Solar Energy Systems

Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity using photovoltaics (directly) or concentrated solar power (indirectly). Absorbing the sun’s heat, these systems benefit from direct sunlight and what better place to utilize solar power via these natural resource than in the Sunshine State? One popular residential system qualifying for a 2013 tax credit is the solar water heater. Using the sun’s thermal energy to heat water in your home, these heaters include a collector and storage tank, coming in a wide variety of designs and prices. To qualify, the system must be certified by the Solar Rating and Certification Corporation (SRCC) or a similar corporation endorsed by the state government, with half of all energy generated coming from the sun. This tax credit includes installation costs.

Tax Credit #3: Geothermal Heat Pumps

Similar to ordinary heat pumps, geothermal heat pumps use the earth’s in-ground natural heat to provide heating, air conditioning and hot water in residential homes. All geothermal heat pump components certified by the manufacturer are covered in this tax credit, but some add-on components, such as back-up systems and ducts, may not be covered. To qualify, the geothermal heat pump must be certification by ENERGY STAR. This tax credit includes installation costs.

Learning from Sandy: is Philly prepared for natural disaster? / 2013-02-21

The Academy of Natural Sciences will host a panel discussion on how we can learn from 2012′s super storm Sandy in improving city planning, disaster preparedness planning, engineering, and policy.

The event takes place this Thursday, 6pm-8pm, February 21, 2013.

View details and register.

Mid-Atlantic Residents May Consider Backup Power Options in the Wake of Super-storm Sandy

Building owners who own solar PV or other off-grid energy resources, may wish to re-consider the typical approach taken for mid-Atlantic solar PV grid-tied installations prior to Sandy, which has been to skip the option for battery backup and/or an option to at least meet some critical loads during daylight. Battery backup being expensive, high-maintenance, and bulky, the most economical way to power critical loads during a grid outage may still be a portable gasoline or permanently-installed natural gas/propane automatic backup generator. However they decide to manage the risk of power failure, widespread outages in the wake of Hurricane Sandy bring the question of incorporating some type of backup power to the foreground in many building owners’ minds.

Micro Combined Heat and Power (mCHP) systems that heat water and/or building air-conditioned space and generate from 1 to 2 kW of electric power have become a major part of the home energy market in Germany, and may prove to be a major player in residential power for the U.S. (businesses and institutions have already widely adopted larger CHP systems for commercial and industrial buildings, here).

However you plan for your energy needs after recent extreme weather events, Robert Monk Electric can help you execute

Certified as a solar PV installer by NABCEP, Robert Monk Electric can upgrade existing solar PV systems with battery backup for critical loads, and/or install an automatic standby backup generator or facilities for a portable generator connection. Contact us now!

Time of Use Electric Meters

Our family has taken advantage of “time of use” electric meters since they were first introduce by SRP many years ago.
